How to open up your pool this Summer : Get your pool ready with our step-by-step guide
As the days get longer and the temperatures start to rise, it’s time to shake off the cover and get your pool prepped for summer. Whether your pool has been dormant for a few months or just lightly used over winter, a good seasonal opening is key to ensuring safe, sparkling water and hassle-free swimming.
At Penguin, we know pools inside out - from installations to maintenance - and we’re here to help make the process simple. Here’s our expert guide to getting your pool ready for the sunshine.
1. Clear the area and remove the cover
Start by tidying up around the pool, brush away leaves, sweep patios, and remove any debris that’s gathered over the colder months. Once you’ve got a clear space, remove the pool cover carefully. Give it a rinse and let it dry completely before storing it away to avoid mould and mildew.
2. Check water levels
Over winter, it’s not uncommon for the water level to drop slightly. Top it up if needed so it reaches the mid-point of the skimmer opening. This ensures proper circulation when you restart the filtration system.
3. Inspect the equipment
Take the time to inspect your pump, filter, heater (if you have one), and any other pool equipment. Look for signs of wear or frost damage. Reconnect everything and double-check for leaks before turning the system back on. If you spot anything worrying, our Penguin Leisure team is on hand to help with quick, professional repairs.
4. Clean and vacuum the pool
Give your pool walls and floor a good brush to dislodge any algae or grime that might have built up. Follow with a thorough vacuum using your pool cleaner or manual vacuum system. This gets rid of any lingering dirt before water treatment begins.
5. Test and treat the water
Before diving in, your pool water needs a full chemical test. You can do this with a home testing kit. Balance your pH, chlorine, and alkalinity levels, and shock the pool with chlorine if needed to kill off any remaining bacteria.
Top tip: Don’t forget to check your stabiliser and calcium levels too, especially if you’re in a hard water area.
6. Set the filtration system running
Once the water is balanced, run your filter for at least 24 hours to circulate the chemicals and clear any remaining cloudiness. Keep an eye on your pressure gauge, if it’s reading high, your filter may need cleaning or backwashing.
7. Give it the final touches
Pop in your pool accessories, check lighting, and tidy the surrounding area. A few finishing touches can transform your pool into a summer-ready space.
